I told you guys to dump PXG’s last golf ball — the original Xtreme Tour — because it just wasn’t durable enough and didn’t perform like a proper tour ball.
But PXG says they’ve fixed it.
Not only that, they’ve released two new tour balls: the PXG Tour and the PXG Tour X.
So, of course, I had to put them to the test. I’ve hit them on course, checked the robot data, and yes — I cut them open with Jeff (my trusty cutting tool who’s basically a celebrity at this point).
Here’s what I found.

Driver Results – Low Spin vs More Carry
Let’s start with the big stick.
- PXG Tour: This one’s the lower-spinning option. You get a flatter flight and a bit more rollout — perfect if you already generate plenty of spin or play in windy conditions.
- PXG Tour X: Spins a bit more, launches higher, and carries farther before coming down steeper. If you struggle to get height or want that extra carry, this is the one.
What surprised me? Both of these balls were seriously long. In MyGolfSpy’s robot test, they went toe-to-toe with the Callaway Chrome Tour Triple Diamond and Bridgestone Tour BX — two of the longest tour balls out there. PXG’s clearly stepped up their game here.

Iron Performance – Height vs Control
With a 7-iron in hand, I noticed:
- Tour X launched higher, peaked higher, and had more stopping power — ideal for holding firm greens.
- Tour flew a little flatter, making it a great choice if you’re already a high-spin player who wants to bring the flight down.
Wedge Spin – Short Game Confidence
Spin around the greens? Really good on both.
The Tour X had just a touch more spin on those 50-yard pitch shots, but both balls gave me that “one hop and stop” feel you want from a urethane tour ball.

Cutting Them Open with Jeff
Alright, let’s talk about the fun part.
I grabbed Jeff — my cutting tool (named by you guys in a community poll!) — and sliced these open side by side.
Here’s what I saw:
- Tour: Slightly firmer core, thicker mantle — that’s what gives it the lower spin and flatter flight.
- Tour X: Softer core, thinner mantle — more spin, higher launch.
Both have PXG’s 338-dimple pattern and a super-thin urethane cover. PXG says it’s tougher than the old Xtreme Tour — and from my testing, I’d agree. It doesn’t scuff up nearly as quickly.

Compression & Feel
- PXG Tour: Around 87–88 compression, just a touch softer than a Pro V1.
- PXG Tour X: Closer to 93–95, more like a Pro V1x — firmer, a little faster off the driver.
On course, both felt great — Tour X felt a little clickier off the putter, which some golfers might like.

My Verdict
After cutting open over 300 golf balls, one thing I’ve learned is that there’s no one-size-fits-all ball.
PXG keeping things simple with just two models is a smart move. Here’s how I’d sum it up:
- Play PXG Tour if you want to knock spin down, flight it lower, and get max rollout.
- Play PXG Tour X if you want a higher flight, softer landings, and maximum carry.
Personally, I think PXG’s nailed it this time. These feel like true tour-level balls now.

PXG is Back!!
I recently tried out the new PXG Tour and PXG Tour X golf balls and was seriously impressed. PXG really fixed the issues with their old ball — these feel like proper tour balls now. The PXG Tour gave me a lower, flatter flight with extra rollout, while the Tour X launched higher, carried farther, and stopped quicker on the greens. Both felt great off the clubface and held up really well after a full round — much more durable than the old Xtreme Tour. I even cut them open (yes, with Jeff!) and you can clearly see the Tour has a firmer core and thicker mantle, while the Tour X is softer with a thinner mantle for more spin. Overall, PXG nailed it with these two — if you need lower spin go Tour, if you want height and spin go Tour X. Highly recommend giving them a try.
